5th Grade Abstract "Value" Portraits

The final project in our Picasso series is a chalk pastel drawing by the students in 5th grade. Each student drew a portrait and divided it into different sections with crisscrossing lines. Students were challenged to create a value scale - a color fading from dark to light - in each section. This project was not easy, and these students' hard work really paid off! Do you agree?

3rd & 4th Grade Abstract "Color" Portraits

Continuing our school-wide focus on Pablo Picasso, the 3rd and 4th grade students were challenged to create a portrait in oil pastel using only cool colors on one side and warm colors on the other. We discussed the different emotions associated with these colors. We discovered that we often think of cool colors as being sad and warm colors as being happy, so many students chose to represent these emotions in their drawings. How many different emotions can you see in these drawings?

1st & 2nd Grade Abstract "Line" Portraits

Wow! I can't believe that this blog hasn't been updated since December - time really flies during the winter holidays! I will be back to updating much more regularly, but if you are itching to see your student's work, remember that you can always visit the Conte Community School Artsonia page!

Like the kindergarteners, 1st and 2nd grade students created abstract portraits inspired by Pablo Picasso. Instead of focusing on shapes, we concentrated on lines for these drawings. Students were challenged to draw a picture of a person using only straight lines on one side and only curvy lines on the other. Didn't they do a wonderful job?
